CCTV or Alarm System: Which Does Your Home Need?

When people ask about home security, they often use "CCTV" and "alarm" interchangeably — but they do different jobs, and the right setup depends on what you're actually trying to achieve.

What CCTV is good for

• Seeing what's happening around your property in real time, from your phone
• Recording footage of visitors, deliveries, or incidents for later reference
• Deterring opportunistic break-ins with visible cameras
• Keeping an eye on entrances, driveways or side access with video doorbells and entry cameras

CCTV is about visibility and evidence — it shows you what happened, but on its own it doesn't actively stop someone from entering.

What an alarm system is good for

• Actively alerting you (and potentially a monitoring centre) the moment someone enters without permission
• Detecting movement inside the property while you're out or asleep
• Making noise and drawing attention immediately, which is often what deters an intruder mid-break-in
• Covering doors, windows and internal spaces with sensors and contacts

An alarm is about detection and response — it's designed to interrupt an incident as it's happening, rather than just record it.

So which do you need?

For most homes, the two work best together: CCTV to monitor and record, and an alarm to actively respond. If you're prioritising one first, it usually comes down to this:
