What Is an LNB and How Do I Know If It Is Faulty?
The LNB does the actual work of receiving your satellite signal. Here's what it does, and how to tell a genuine LNB fault from a cable or alignment problem.
Short answer: The LNB is the component on a satellite dish's arm that receives and converts the satellite signal. Missing channels, intermittent reception, or a fault affecting one receiver but not another can all point to a failing LNB — but cable and alignment faults can look identical, so testing is needed to confirm it.

What LNB means
LNB stands for Low-Noise Block downconverter. It's the small component mounted on an arm at the front of a satellite dish, and it's responsible for actually receiving the very high frequency signal from the satellite and converting it into something a receiver box can use.
Where the LNB is located
It sits on the arm projecting out from the centre of the dish, pointed back at the dish's curved surface, which reflects and focuses the satellite signal onto it.
What it does
The dish itself is just a reflector with no active electronics — all of the actual signal reception happens in the LNB, which then sends the converted signal down the coaxial cable to your receiver or TV.
Single, twin, quad, octo and wideband LNBs
LNBs come with different numbers of outputs depending on how many independent receivers or tuners need feeding: a single LNB serves one output, twin serves two, and quad or octo LNBs serve four or eight. Sky Q systems commonly use a wideband LNB, which works differently to the older Universal LNB type used on many standard Sky and Freesat installations. A hybrid LNB can provide both a wideband and a standard output from the same dish, which is how some properties run older and newer equipment side by side.
Sky and Freesat compatibility

Missing channels

Intermittent signal
An LNB that comes and goes, particularly getting worse in certain weather or temperatures, is a common symptom of a failing (rather than completely dead) unit.
Problems affecting one receiver but not another
Where a multi-output LNB feeds several boxes, one output can fail while others keep working perfectly, which points toward that specific LNB output rather than the dish, cable, or satellite feed itself.
Weather-related symptoms
Some LNB faults are more noticeable in cold, damp, or rapidly changing weather conditions, as moisture ingress into an ageing unit can affect its electronics. If a fault reliably comes and goes with the weather, this is a useful clue rather than proof on its own.
Cable and connector faults that can resemble LNB failure
A damaged cable, corroded connector, or water ingress at a joint can produce symptoms that look identical to a failing LNB — signal loss, intermittent picture, or missing channels. This is exactly why testing matters rather than replacing the LNB on assumption alone.
Water ingress
LNBs are designed to be weatherproof, but the seal can degrade over years of exposure. Water getting into the LNB itself is one of the more common causes of gradual, weather-linked failure.
Why signal testing is needed before replacing parts
Because loose cables, damaged connectors, dish misalignment and a genuinely faulty LNB can all produce very similar symptoms, proper signal testing at the receiver is the only reliable way to confirm which component is actually at fault before anything is replaced.
